132. Graceful divide (poem)

~ Written by Danielle N. Bilski ~

Graceful divide

I can’t be too close to you.
I’d only reach out and hold you
That’s something I should not do
Oh, how badly I want to.
Oh, I want you.
It’s taking all of me to see you
Without feeling your soft touch.
I never thought
we could be deprived of so much love.
I want my life back
But you don’t know that…

I can’t breathe.
Dirt fills my lungs.
I can’t breathe.
What on earth have I become?
A shell of myself
Can you even still tell
I am someone?
As I hide
Within this graceful divide.

It’s felt so long in this dark place.
We didn’t know what we created
Until they showed us how much they could take, away.
Oh, how badly I want to.
Oh, I want you.
Please don’t leave me all alone here.
Will you lay beside me for a little while?
Still too far, but close enough
For I live to see you smile.
We want our life back,
Now you know that…

We can’t breathe.
Dirt fills our lungs.
We can’t breathe.
How cold have we become?
A shell of ourself
Can we even still tell
We are someone?
As we all hide
Within this graceful divide.

I heard you say,
‘Darling, don’t be afraid’,
As I slip in and out of this confusion.
Or is it just an illusion?

We didn’t know what we created
Until they showed us how much they could take, away.

But I will breathe.
Your love will fill my lungs.
I will breathe, again.
How light we’ll all become.
The best of ourself
will finally yell
I am someone!
As we survive to thrive
Without this graceful divide.
