144. Shape of Us (poem)

Laying side by side
fingers entwined
their hair tangled in the grass
she whispered,
‘since we met, I have been afraid
of this moment when you might ask.’

He looked in her eyes,
smiled gently.
‘Why?’

She said,
‘if you spin me in a circle
I cycle through life like clockwork.
Teach me within a triangle
each time I rise, I fear the next steep fall.
Stare at me inside a square
I decorate the walls to forget they are there.
Keep me in a cube
my voice is silenced and they are counting my views.
Shape me into a star
I reach for unseen points within the dark.
Dream of me like a diamond
I reflect our future in a colourful light.
Hold me in a heart
I never escape without tearing you apart.’

He said,
‘oh, but do you realise what you are saying,
darling, all you have talked about is shaping?
There is one form you have failed to see and
to enjoy this moment, breathe, as you are and will always be free.
Instead of looking outside for all of those lines,
maybe infinity already exists within the shape of you and me.’
